Well – Derek Watkins is going to be in Elgin this summer for the trumpet festival. I just love his sound & his playing. He has incredible chops, but exercises great taste and restraint in his playing. Here he is with James Last playing Mac Park.

So – been working through some Woody Shaw transcriptions recently in order to try to improve both jazz chops, reading and aural stuff. Jings – the guy was a genius. Some of the changes he wrote are astonishing, moreover what he played over those changes in solos – pure stream of consciousness stuff. Love the opening for Woody III, but Rosewood is just brill.
